“I Knew In My Gut I’d Never Be Wealthy
Working For Someone Else”

The following are words spoken by a father to his son. They work equally well for a daughter. Tell me if they sound familiar: “Son, if you want to make something of yourself, you’ve got to stay in school, study hard and get into a good college. Then, when you graduate, you can get yourself a good job at a reputable firm – one that has good benefits and a pension plan. You can raise a family and when you retire, you’ll still have something coming in every month.”

That was the ‘American dream’ for our parents and grandparents. For some it worked out okay. They lived their middle class lifestyle and never gave a thought to what they could have had. Others, like my parents, barely squeezed by, slaving for long hours every day to feed us three kids. Still others are only now realizing that what they worked all their lives for won’t be enough to keep them above water as they slide deeper and deeper into their old age.

You Call This A Living?

After college I got a job at a financial planner’s office. That was back in 2002. My parents had instilled in me a work ethic that says “give it all ya got!” So I put in over 50+ hours a week. My boss, well, she didn’t give me all she had. No. She paid me about $575 a week. What I ended up with after the Tax Man took his tribute, barely covered the usual rent, utilities, and car payment. Oh, and food. A man likes to eat and I was sick of eating ramen all the time. I knew in my gut I’d never be wealthy working for someone else.

One day at the financial planner’s office, I had a chance to review my parent’s assets and liabilities. They were way past their eyeballs in debt. If they both worked until the age of 100, I think they’d still be owing money to creditors. That’s the sacrifice they made so their children would have a good education. And I’m thinking: Is this how I’m supposed to raise my own family? By digging a huge debt hole for myself? One I couldn’t get out of in the span of an entire lifetime?

I was beginning to realize that what I didn’t learn in school about money wasn’t much different from what my parents didn’t learn. And that scared me. A lot!

Is Everyone ‘Money Stupid’?

My job also gave me some good insights into the financial mind of the average American. Like my parents, they are financially brain dead. Americans, as a whole, owe money on a grand scale. They seek financial advice from people trained to save them a buck while they loose their shirts through inflation, other ‘hidden taxes’ and money manipulations. Mind you, at this time I could sense something was way out of whack…money-wise…with everyone! I just didn’t know how to fix it.

My Financial Epiphany

Still in the year 2002 here, I meet the man who would become my first true mentor. He explained money and profits to me in a way I’d never been taught before. But more than that, he showed me the substance of his wealth. Tangible things I could touch. Not just theory or hearsay. It was all very real. And here’s the shocking truth: he revealed to me that he earned more money in one month than my financial planner boss earned in a year!

He gave me a book called, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. It was like I had been blind and now I could see. But that book was merely the catalyst. There was still so much more to learn. And I began an intense study of the ultra wealthy. How do they think? What are their strategies? Who do they rely on for advice? Then I began to adopt their strategies and even their mindsets.

I don’t have a job anymore. Instead of working for a weekly paycheck, I’m creating my own wealth every day, using the kind of knowledge you can’t find in traditional schooling. No economics degree and no business degree could possibly teach me what I now know.
